En Memoire de Seydou Keita
One can't rightfully post about Malik Sidibe without also mentioning his predecessor Seydou Keita. Keita was a Malian photographer on the scene about 10 years before Malik. He is known for his masterful formal composition and his use of different backdrops to create beautiful pattern on pattern portraits, like the lovely lady below in her beautiful dress and proud smile... Plus, take a look at the amazing face on this little boy with his bike!
Vive Malik Sidibe!
I recently stumbled across the works of famed Malian photographer Malik Sidibe, and I have to say he's photographs were a huge catalyst in launching this months theme. Sidibe is a Malian photographer who became famous in the 60s and 70s for his documentary photography and portraiture of youth culture in the Malian capital of Bamako. His work is both timeless and contemporary. It's bold and graphic portrayal of African youth beautifully reflected a formative time in modern Malian history.

Global Travel Photo Contest
In honor of this month's theme I'd like to post a link to one of my favorite travel photo sources. Every year Planet Magazine holds a Global Travel Photo Contest. Past submissions have included, among others, Brooklyn Favorite, Bill Phelps. For those of you budding travel photographers, the deadline for 2011 submissions has just been extended to November 20th, and with the chance to win a "round-the-world" ticket, get out there and start snapping pics. Here are a few of my favorites from previous years submissions:

Ralph Meatyard
The images below are by the photographer Ralph Meatyard. A once optician turned photographer, from Normal, Illinois, Meatyard's haunting images were often improvisational and heavily influenced by jazz music of the time. His work, to me, evokes a feeling of the desperate south through the eyes of a hopeful and imaginative child.
